Orkney Islands in a Campervan

Have you ever been intrigued by the isolation of the Orkney Isles. If so why not hire one of our campers from our Easicampers at Edinburgh Airport.
After collecting your campervan from our dedicated staff it’s time to start on your adventure. This is a journey that will take you through forest and country parks, wild and rugged terrain and the VW California is perfect for these conditions.

With a 7 speed DSG Automatic gearbox these were built for the Highlands of Scotland. After leaving the capital of Edinburgh set off North. Now the quickest way to get to the Orkney Islands is by driving up the A9 through the cities of Perth(Scotland) and Inverness it is a 6 hour drive to Scrabster where you will board the ferry to get to the Islands.
Your pick up of your campervan begins at 14:00pm so you would probably be better to stay over somewhere in between Perth and Inverness to recharge your batteries before you embark on the rest of your journey. You will find a list of campsites here which could be helpful in finding somewhere to split your trip up:www.ukcampsties.co.uk

A good half way point is around the Aviemore area of the Cairngorms National Park this will break up your trip and give you a chance to take in the dramatic views of the Area.
After a peaceful night’s sleep in your vw california campervan its time to set off again on the A9 up through Inverness to the UK’s most northernly harbour town of Scrabster which is located 3 hours from Aviemore.
It’s here in this idyllic fishing port where you will catch your ferry over to Orkney and begin your Island experience. Your boat to the Mainland Island will take you in to the town of Stromness.
Check for times for the ferry services to the islands http://www.scrabster.co.uk/sectors/ferries

The Orkneys are full of Neolithic sites including Skara Brae which is home to a preserved village and a reconstructed house and chambered burial tomb. It was back in 1850 when a large storm hit the Islands and uncovered the fascinating site.
The islands are home to large seal colonies and home to stone circles that are older than Stonehenge.

If you want to see an abundance of wildlife then Westray Island is one of the places to go. Book in advance if you want to take your camper as space is limited. Here you will see Puffins, Razorbills and Kittiwakes(make sure you have brought your binoculars).
The Islands are famous for its fantastically tasting seafood and beef. There are a number of fine restaurants but two favourites are the following thefoveran.com and ferryinn.com have a look for ideas.

This is an isolated area so make sure you are fully prepared for all weather possibilities.

National Trust Scotland in a Motorhome

Just like in England and Wales, there is a National trust for Scotland. Although you can join for a year you can just pay on the day at the relevant attraction. If you are a member of the English National Trust you do get entry into all of the Scottish properties.

Why not hire a Motorhome in Edinburgh and go and visit a few of these gems that are dotted about the whole of Scotland, whether its Castles and Houses that interest you or you prefer country walks or long beach walks.
If it’s close to Edinburgh you want to stay then here are a few places that may interest you located around the Stirling area which is an hours drive in your Motorhome.

Dollar Glen
An oasis of wildlife around woodland walks, waterfalls and deep gorges in the Ochil Hills (take your wellies with you)

Visit the site where the famous Robert The Bruce won his famous victory and stand at the side of his statue and take a look at the fantastic visitor centre.

The Pineapple
It’s a Pineapple shaped building what more is there to say? Pineapples were first grown in 1731. Take a look at the wildlife as you walk through the parkland.
If you want to venture further into Scotlands deepest highlands here are two more places to visit
Take your Motorhome north of Perth and head to the town of Dunkeld.

Look out for Salmon on the River Tay which runs through the town which has had its 17 and 18th century houses restored by the Trust. Nip in to the shop to pick your souvenirs up before you make your way to your next stop.

The Hermitage
Here you are in deepest Perthshire, make your way through the Douglas Firs which line this woodland walk. See if you spot a totem pole hidden from view. Take a look at Black Linn Falls this is best viewed from the folly which is called Osian’s Hall.
Further north take you motorhome up to your next 2 attractions.

Deep in the Perthshire hills one of the goriest battles in Jacobite history in the 17th century at the Battle of Killiecrankie a redcoat jumped 18ft across the raging River Garry to save himself(please don’t try this)

Linn of Tummel
Take a riverside walk along the River Garry watch out for the fish ladder an invention in 1910 that allowed the Salmon to swim upstream, watch out for red squirrels, otters and other wild animals

East Coast Ideas in a Campervan

Here at Easicampers at Edinburgh Airport, a 10 minute shuttlebus journey from the arrivals hall. After arriving at the airport make your way to the dedicated transfer spot where our shuttle bus will pick you up and take you direct to our location at 3 Queen Anne Drive, Newbridge EH28 8LH where you will begin your journey in a VW California.

Once you are on your way in your VW California a popular route to take would be to tour the East of Scotland. A coastal trip that will leave you wanting more and wishing you had booked a longer holiday instead. Our campervans are ideal for 1-4 people with a electric pop up roof and a roll down bench seat bed. If you would like more room why not hire one of our fantastic slide on awnings which can be used as extra storage space or even a sleeping space.

Take your camper along the East coast and enjoy many highlights starting at Perth. This fabulous city is just over the M90 over the River Tay and before being known as Perth it was called St Johns Town(the local football team are called St Johnstone) the city is known as The Gateway to the Highlands.
There are a few attractions you may want to visit whilst visiting the city

After a night and day here take the main A90 road to your next stop which is the city of Dundee which should take you about 30 minutes in your VW campervan.
Dundee is home to two football clubs which play there games here and the two grounds are only 100 metres away.

The town is home to one of the worst rail disasters that has ever happened. The Tay Rail Bridge which was opened in 1878 only lasted 18 months before a partial collapse on the northern section destroyed it as the result of a violent storm which happened as a passenger train was on it, claiming the lives of 75 passengers. Dundee hasn’t just seen a bridge destroyed, they had a large fire in 1906 which looked like rivers of Whiskey flowing by as in the early 1900’s Dundee was a large whiskey town.

Most recently the town has become home to the first design museum in Scotland and it also bears the name of Victoria & Albert. Although opened in September 2018 it officially was opened by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in February 2019. It stands by the River Tay with magnificent views.

Your last major port of call in your campervan is Aberdeen one of the most easterly points in the Uk and a major fishing harbour and port and one of the largest producers of off shore oil refinery. In 2015 Aberdeen was voted the 75th liveliest place in the UK. In Aberdeen the temperature is quite different to what you would expect as it features an Oceanic climate with the city lying on a maritime/marine shelf.

Ayr Coastal Highlights

After collecting your motorhome from Easicampers in Edinburgh why not head west towards the coast of Ayrshire, Scotland and enjoy this spectacular part of this scenic country.
After your comprehensive vehicle demonstration by our dedicated staff why not head along the M8 towards Glasgow then take the M74 and M77 down to Kilmarnock, just over an hour away from our branch in Edinburgh, Scotland. On this trip you’ll take in breath taking scenery, idyllic coast lines, and magnificent houses and castles.

Kilmarnock is a small town which is on the main route from Glasgow to Ayr. The most famous product to come out of here is the Scottish whisky brand Jonnie Walker which before being rebranded was called Walkers Kilmarnock Whisky when they first launched in the mid 1800’s there is even a statue of Mr Walker on Strand Street in the City Centre. Nobel prize winners Alexander Fleming and John Boyd-Orr went to school at Kilmarnock Academy.
Kilmarnock F.C are the oldest professional football club in Scotland known by the local’s as “Killie” they play at Rugby Park which as a interesting fact that is this was the first Football Ground in Scotland which had floodlights fitted.

After a peaceful day in Kilmarnock its further south we head to the seaside town of Ayr with views of the Isle of Arran. Have a seat and watch the world go by whilst enjoying the local fish and chips. With an abundance of souvenir shops and major high street shops it’s a nice place to spend a few hours.
On the south side of Ayr here lies the Electric Brae as you drive along here at a slow speed, if you think you are going forward you are actually going backward and the opposite applies. The Victorian’s thought this was due to the electricity from the Isle of Arran, as this was a new phenomenon as electricity was a new thing back then.
This was proven to be an optical illusion but is quite a hit with tourists. Why not visit the website below to take a look and plan your journey

Culzean Castle
Further down the road is Culzean Castle. One of many castles that are run by the Scottish National Trust this fabulous place is nestled on the coast line with access to a shingle beach perfect for walks just check tide times before you decide to go for a walk we wouldn’t want you to get cut off and it does come in quite fast. I once was on Ayr beach and the tide came in quite sharpish and takes you by surprise.
The castle was the home of Clan Kennedy but back in 1945 they gave up the Castle to the National Trust because the family didn’t want to pay inheritance tax on it. The top apartment block was given to at the time General Eisenhower as part of the deal as at this point he was Supreme Commander of the allied forces. He once stayed there whilst President of The United States of America.

There are fabulous walks for miles down to the beach and through woodland. There is a large lake to enjoy drinks and ice creams. If you have little ones with you there is a land train from the Castle to the massive adventure play area (even the adults can have a go).
Visit https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/culzean for prices and opening times

As we make our way a further south head to the picturesque fishing village of Girvan (stop off on your way to take a picture at Donald Trump’s Turnberry Golf Course the views are amazing). Girvan gives you chance to park your motorhome up and reminisce about your hire from us at Easicampers, whilst enjoying a nice walk round with the sea breeze in your face.
