The Great Lake District Motorhome Adventure

The Johnson family—Dad (Mark), Mum (Sarah), and their lively 12-year-old twins, Jake and Emma—had been looking forward to this trip for weeks. On Friday afternoon, they picked up their sleek, four-berth motorhome from Preston and set off towards the Lake District, brimming with excitement for their four-night adventure.

Day 1: Friday – Coniston Water

Their first stop was Coniston Water, where they parked up at Coniston Park Coppice Caravan and Motorhome Club Site. Nestled among tall trees and just a short walk from the lake, the site was a perfect place to spend their first night.

After settling in, they took a short sunset walk along the shoreline, watching the calm waters reflect the golden light. The fresh air worked up their appetites, and back at the motorhome, they enjoyed a hearty dinner before gathering around the table for a competitive game of Monopoly. The temperature dropped slightly, so they threw on their jackets and stepped outside to gaze at the stars before turning in for the night.

Day 2: Saturday – Windermere & Brockhole Adventure

The morning sunshine poured through the windows, and after a quick breakfast, the Johnsons packed up and drove to Windermere, England’s largest lake. Their first stop was Brockhole on Windermere, an adventure-packed destination for families.

Jake and Emma tackled the Treetop Nets, bouncing and climbing their way through giant nets suspended high above the ground. Mark and Sarah, not wanting to be left out, took on the Treetop Trek, a thrilling high-ropes course that had them swinging and zip-lining through the trees. After a well-earned lakeside picnic, they rented kayaks and spent an hour paddling on the lake, enjoying the warm breeze.

That evening, they checked into Low Wray Campsite, which offered stunning lakeside pitches with breathtaking views. They cooked a barbecue dinner and enjoyed another evening of playing cards, laughter, and a stroll along the water before bedtime.

Day 3: Sunday – Ullswater & Aira Force Waterfall

Sunday morning saw them heading to Ullswater, a scenic gem known for its tranquility and stunning landscapes. Their main destination was Aira Force, a magnificent waterfall nestled in lush woodland. The family followed the circular walking trail, clambering over rocks and bridges while listening to the roar of the cascading water.

After a picnic near the falls, they booked a short cruise on an Ullswater Steamer, gliding across the shimmering water and admiring the towering fells. The twins took turns using the binoculars to spot wildlife along the shore.

That evening, they stayed at The Quiet Site, an award-winning eco-friendly campsite perched above the lake. With a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the site provided a perfect place to unwind. They spent the night playing card games in the motorhome, reliving the highlights of their trip so far.

Day 4: Monday – Keswick & Derwentwater

Their final full day was spent in Keswick, a bustling market town packed with charm. After exploring the local shops and picking up souvenirs, they ventured to Derwentwater, where they rented bikes and cycled part of the scenic lakeside trail. The route was gentle yet thrilling, offering beautiful views of the fells and surrounding forests.

In the afternoon, they visited The Puzzling Place, an interactive attraction filled with optical illusions, where Jake and Emma giggled endlessly at the mind-bending exhibits.

For their last night, they stayed at Castlerigg Farm Campsite, high above Keswick with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. They watched the sunset paint the sky in shades of pink and orange, cooked their final motorhome meal, and enjoyed one last round of board games before calling it a night.

Day 5: Tuesday – The Journey Home

With hearts full of memories and cameras full of photos, the Johnsons packed up early Tuesday morning and began their journey back to Preston. The trip had been everything they had hoped for—adventure, laughter, and quality time together. As they dropped off the motorhome, Jake turned to his parents and said, “Can we do this again next year?”

Sarah and Mark exchanged smiles. “Absolutely.”

A Campervan Adventure Through Derbyshire’s Hidden Wonders

Day 1: Hitting the Road from Blackburn
The excitement was palpable as my wife and I picked up our campervan in Blackburn, our home for the next five nights. After a quick check of supplies and a last-minute dash for snacks, we set off towards Derbyshire, a county promising rugged landscapes, charming villages, and hidden gems.

Our first stop was Hayfield, a picturesque village at the edge of the Peak District. We settled in at Hayfield Camping and Caravanning Club Site, nestled beneath Kinder Scout. With the sun beginning to set, we took a gentle stroll along the Sett Valley Trail, soaking in the rolling hills and winding rivers before returning to the campervan for a cozy night.

Day 2: Hiking Kinder Scout and Exploring Castleton
A bright morning greeted us, perfect for tackling Kinder Scout, the highest peak in the Peak District. The climb was challenging but rewarded us with panoramic views stretching for miles. Feeling accomplished (and slightly out of breath), we rewarded ourselves with a pub lunch at The Sportsman Inn.

After lunch, we drove to Castleton, home to historic caves and the dramatic Peveril Castle ruins. We explored Speedwell Cavern, drifting through eerie underground passages on a boat tour before climbing up to the castle for yet another breath-taking view. That evening, we parked up at Laneside Caravan Park, where we fell asleep to the soothing sounds of the countryside.

Day 3: Buxton and the Monsal Trail
After a hearty breakfast, we set off for Buxton, a town famous for its Georgian architecture and natural thermal springs. A visit to Poole’s Cavern led us deep into limestone caves, filled with stunning stalactites. We wandered through Pavilion Gardens, admiring the glasshouses and vibrant flower displays.

In the afternoon, we took on the Monsal Trail, an old railway route turned cycling and walking path. The journey through tunnels and across viaducts made for a spectacular ride. That night, we camped at Greenhills Holiday Park near Bakewell, indulging in a well-earned Bakewell pudding from a local bakery before calling it a day.

Day 4: Chatsworth House and Bakewell
No trip to Derbyshire is complete without visiting Chatsworth House, the grand estate of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The art, opulent interiors, and extensive gardens kept us busy for most of the day. My wife, a lover of all things Jane Austen, was thrilled to walk in the footsteps of Pride and Prejudice’s Mr. Darcy.

We then returned to Bakewell, where we wandered along the River Wye, browsed quaint shops, and, of course, sampled another Bakewell pudding (for research purposes, of course!). We parked up at Beech Croft Farm, a peaceful campsite in the heart of the countryside.

Day 5: Matlock Bath and a Scenic Drive
Our journey led us to Matlock Bath, a quirky riverside town with a seaside feel. We took a cable car ride up to The Heights of Abraham, where we explored caverns and marvelled at the panoramic views of the Derwent Valley.

With our trip nearing its end, we embarked on a slow, scenic drive through the Derbyshire Dales, stopping in small villages for tea and a chat with friendly locals. Our final night was spent at Rivendale Caravan Park, a quiet retreat surrounded by nature. We reflected on our adventure, already reminiscing about our favourite moments.

Day 6: Homeward Bound
Reluctantly, we packed up and started the journey back to Blackburn. The rolling hills of Derbyshire faded into the rear-view mirror, but the memories of our campervan adventure remained vivid. From towering peaks to underground wonders, Derbyshire had offered us a perfect mix of adventure, history, and relaxation.

As we returned the campervan and stepped back into our daily routine, we couldn’t help but start planning our next road trip. After all, the open road always beckons.
