  3. Understand insurance: verify damage policies, mileage limits, and EU cover.
  4. Check driver requirements: most firms require drivers aged 25+ with a clean UK licence.
  5. Plan overnight stays: use campsites or designated motorhome parks rather than wild camping.

This blog will provide all the best hints, tips and tricks for Family Motorhome hire in Preston: Happy Kids on the Road. Whether you’re chasing the sun in Cornwall, discovering castles in Northumberland, or simply looking to enjoy a change of pace in the Lake District, travelling by motorhome offers a unique sense of freedom that hotels and flights just can’t match.

At our motorhome hire company based in Preston, we see families of all sizes embark on unforgettable adventures every week. But we also know that for many parents, the idea of long drives with little ones can feel a bit daunting. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help keep your kids happy, entertained, and safe on your motorhome holiday – because when the kids are happy, the whole family thrives!

Why Choose a Motorhome for Family Travel?

Before we dive into the fun stuff, let’s talk about why motorhomes are such a fantastic option for family travel. Family motorhome hire in Preston is a great option for families with children of all ages:

  • Flexibility – You can stop where and when you want, take detours, and explore at your own pace.
  • Comfort – Modern motorhomes come with beds, a kitchen, a bathroom, and plenty of storage – perfect for families.
  • Quality time – With no airport queues or hotel check-ins, your holiday starts the moment you turn the key.
  • Adventure – For kids, sleeping in a “house on wheels” is an adventure in itself!

And with our Preston-based fleet, hiring a motorhome for a family holiday has never been easier – meaning you’re never far from your next family memory!

Top Tips to Keep Kids Happy on the Road

1. Get Them Involved in Planning

One of the easiest ways to get children excited about your motorhome adventure is to involve them in the planning. Show them a map, talk about the places you’ll visit, and let them help choose a few activities or stops along the way. This gives them a sense of ownership and builds anticipation for the trip.

2. Pack Smart – Don’t Forget the Comforts

While your motorhome is well-equipped, bringing a few home comforts can make all the difference for little ones. Their favourite pillow or soft toy, cosy blankets, bedtime books, and even a nightlight can help make your motorhome feel like home.

You’ll also want to pack a range of clothes for all weather conditions (this is the UK, after all!) and plenty of snacks to keep those tummies from rumbling between stops.

Entertainment on the Move: Fun Games & Activities

Long drives don’t have to mean boredom. In fact, motorhome travel offers the perfect setting for some classic road trip games – and a few modern ones too!

1. Travel Games

Here are a few family favourites to play while driving:

  • I Spy – A timeless game that never gets old.
  • 20 Questions – A fun way to test everyone’s imagination and keep minds active.
  • The Licence Plate Game – Try to spot plates from as many different areas as possible.
  • Story Chain – One person starts a story, and everyone adds a sentence in turn.

2. Activity Packs

Before you set off, create or buy small activity packs filled with colouring books, stickers, crossword puzzles, and travel-sized games. Tablets loaded with educational apps or films can be great for longer drives, just be sure to balance screen time with interactive play.

3. Audiobooks & Music

Create a family playlist with everyone’s favourite tunes or download audiobooks for kids – a great way to keep them engaged while giving adults a break from talking dinosaurs and cartoon jingles.

Break Time = Play Time

Kids need to move – especially after sitting for a while. One of the joys of motorhome travel is the ability to stop and stretch your legs almost anywhere. Plan regular breaks in parks, picnic areas, or roadside attractions where the kids can burn off some energy.

Look out for:

  • National Trust or English Heritage sites – Often have open spaces and family trails.
  • Beaches, forests, and nature reserves – Perfect for a quick runaround or scavenger hunt.
  • Local playgrounds – Great for a break and meeting other children.

Safety First: Keeping Kids Secure and Happy

Safety is our top priority – and we know it’s yours too. Here’s how to ensure your children stay safe throughout your journey:

1. Child Seats

All children under 12 years old or under 135 cm in height must use an appropriate child restraint in vehicles. Our motorhomes are compatible with most child car seats – just let us know what you need, and we’ll make sure you’re all set up before you leave Preston.

2. Secure While Driving

Make sure children are properly buckled in and have everything they need within reach before setting off – water, toys, and entertainment. Avoid letting them walk around or stand in the motorhome while it’s moving.

3. Safety Checks

Teach children about motorhome safety – how to safely enter and exit, how to use steps, and that the kitchen and appliances are off-limits unless supervised.

Making Mealtimes Fun

One of the perks of travelling in a motorhome is having a kitchen on board – perfect for preparing healthy snacks and meals wherever you are.

Here are some family-friendly meal ideas:

  • Make-your-own wraps or sandwiches – Kids love getting involved.
  • Breakfast picnics – Find a scenic spot and enjoy breakfast outdoors.
  • Evening marshmallow toasts – Park at a campsite with fire-friendly facilities and create memories by the fire.

Let older kids help with simple tasks like setting the table or mixing ingredients – it’s a great way to keep them engaged and teach life skills too.

Embrace the Adventure

More than anything, remember that the best part of motorhome travel with kids is the freedom to be spontaneous. Some of the most memorable moments come from the unexpected – a detour to a quirky farm shop, finding the perfect skipping stone at a quiet lake, or parking up to watch the sunset from your window.

The joy of motorhome holidays lies in the journey, not just the destination. And when you travel with kids, every little stop can become an unforgettable adventure.

Why Choose Easicampers Edinburgh…

Hiring a motorhome from Edinburgh is a fantastic way to explore the stunning landscapes and historic sites of Scotland at your own pace. Edinburgh, Scotland’s vibrant capital, makes an ideal starting point with its excellent rental options, transport links, and nearby attractions. Whether you’re planning a short getaway or a longer road trip, a motorhome gives you the freedom to go where you want, when you want—without the hassle of hotel bookings.

From Edinburgh, you can head north to the Highlands, explore the scenic North Coast 500, or discover the rugged beauty of the Isle of Skye. Motorhome travel lets you immerse yourself in Scotland’s wild nature, waking up by lochs, beaches, or forests. You’ll also find plenty of well-equipped campsites and motorhome-friendly stops along popular routes.

Most rental companies in Edinburgh offer a range of motorhomes to suit different group sizes and budgets, from compact campervans to spacious luxury models. These vehicles typically come fully equipped with beds, cooking facilities, and heating, making them ideal for Scotland’s often changeable weather.

Driving in Scotland is generally straightforward, but rural roads can be narrow and winding—so take your time and enjoy the journey. Be sure to plan ahead, check for any travel restrictions, and familiarize yourself with Scotland’s camping and parking laws, especially if you plan to “wild camp.”

Wet, Wild & Wonderful

Our 3-Night Campervan Adventure from Blackburn Through the Trough of Bowland to the Cumbrian Coast

Think a rainy weekend ruins a road trip?

Think again. From ancient ruins to coastal views and full-bodied reds, here’s how we turned a wet and windy weekend into a romantic escape, armed only with a campervan and a stubborn sense of adventure.

Escape the Ordinary: A Weekend Campervan Tour of North Lancashire & Cumbria

When life gets hectic, sometimes the best remedy is packing up the campervan, pointing it toward the horizon, and seeing where the road, and the rain, takes you. That’s exactly what my wife and I did this past weekend, setting off from Blackburn on a three-night campervan tour through the Trough of Bowland and along the wild, rugged coastlines of North Lancashire and Cumbria.

It may have been wet, cold, and a bit gusty at times, but nothing could dampen our spirits, or our heater. Here’s how our weekend unfolded, where we stayed, what we saw, and why you should absolutely consider hiring a campervan to explore this underrated slice of Northern England.

Day 1: From Blackburn to the Trough of Bowland, A Scenic Start

We left Blackburn on a moody Friday afternoon, the kind of grey sky that says, “bring the waterproofs.” The Trough of Bowland didn’t disappoint, it never does. Mist curled around the hills like an old storybook, the sheep looked confused by our optimism, and the single-track lanes delivered just the right amount of “will we make it?” tension.

We parked up for the night near Dunsop Bridge, at a peaceful little site with basic amenities but a view worth every drop of drizzle. Dinner was simple: fresh bread, local cheese, smoked meats, olives and dips, and a bottle of Amarone opened under the sound of rain tapping the van roof. Cosy, dry, and warm, we toasted to freedom on four wheels.

Day 2: Lancaster and Morecambe – Coastal Towns with Stories to Tell

Saturday’s rain arrived sideways, but we didn’t mind. Lancaster was first on the list, a city packed with history. Lancaster Castle, grim and fascinating, gave us shelter and a sense of place. We wandered the cobbled streets, ducked into cafés, and admired Georgian architecture before heading west.

Morecambe was next. Say what you like, but there’s something endearing about its salty charm. We strolled along the seafront in our waterproofs, snapped a photo with Eric Morecambe’s statue (smiling through the rain), and hunted down a seafood lunch. The wind might’ve whipped the chips from our plates, but the view over the bay was worth it.

That night we stayed at a small coastal camper stop near Silverdale, remote, rustic, and close enough to the sea that we could hear the waves crash beneath the howl of the wind. We cooked in the van and cracked open another bottle of wine, watching the storm roll in. Honestly? Pure magic.

Day 3: Arnside to Ulverston – Sea, Steam and Something Sweet

Sunday brought us north to Arnside, a coastal gem where the sky met the estuary in a blur of blue-grey. Despite the damp, the air felt fresh, briny, alive. We hiked briefly (very briefly, thanks, drizzle) then drove up to Ulverston, birthplace of Arthur Stanley Jefferson – Stan Laurel of Laurel & Hardy, and an underrated food scene.

Lunch was a warm pub with a fireplace roaring and a reight good pint that actually made us forget our socks were damp. A small art gallery, a steam train museum, and some boutique shops made Ulverston feel like a secret worth keeping.

We spent our final night at a peaceful camper park just outside town, set in woodland with all the mod cons. Rain tapped its familiar rhythm on the roof as we curled up under a blanket and reflected on how little the weather matters when you’re in the right place, with the right person.

Why Hire a Campervan for a Northern England Coastal Tour?

Hiring a campervan from Blackburn and exploring the Trough of Bowland through to the Cumbrian coastline offers the perfect UK weekend break, even in bad weather. With stunning landscapes, historical landmarks, delicious food, and total freedom, a campervan road trip is a warm, dry ticket to adventure, romance, and slow travel.

Pro tip: Don’t wait for sunshine. Rain brings its own kind of beauty, especially when viewed from a comfy camper with a hot brew and someone you love.

Wet Weather, Warm Hearts

Three nights. Dozens of windswept memories. Zero regrets.

Would we do it again? Absolutely. Would we check the forecast? Probably not.

The North West isn’t just a place, it’s a mood. And with a campervan, you don’t just visit it. You live in it, roll with it, and toast to it through every squall.

Ready to hit the road? Whether you’re local to Blackburn or visiting the North West, hiring a campervan is your ticket to an unforgettable (and perfectly unpredictable) UK coastal adventure.

Book your campervan and make your own adventure.

Vans, Views, and a Herd of Goats We Didn’t Adopt: A Weekend in North Wales

There’s something magical about turning the key in a Volkswagen California Ocean and watching the everyday melt in the rearview mirror. We picked up our gleaming home-on-wheels from Easicampers Blackburn, and by the time we hit the motorway, the only thing we were worried about was whether we’d packed enough bacon. Spoiler alert: we had.

Night 1: Lake Bala Bliss

Our first stop was the beautiful Pant yr Onnen campsite, right on the shores of Lake Bala. It’s the kind of place that forces you to breathe deeper. Being the only lakeside spot where fires are allowed, it would’ve been rude not to have a BBQ. There’s something primeval about grilling sausages with your toes in the lake and a chilled drink in hand, as the sun dips behind the hills. The van had everything we needed—and more—and made us feel like seasoned adventurers, even if our wildest struggle was choosing ketchup or relish.

Saturday: Sun, Sea, and Pub Envy

Saturday saw us coasting through the rolling roads of Snowdonia toward Abersoch—a place I’d never been to and now wonder why I ever left off the list. Quaint streets, sea views, and surf shops give it a relaxed vibe. We strolled, explored, and then refuelled at the newly renovated St Tudwals Inn, where the decor and menu were just as charming as the town.

After lunch, we indulged a detour to Pwllheli, purely because I wanted to stare longingly at yachts and pretend I knew starboard from stern. Huge thanks to my wife and daughter for smiling politely while I imagined us sailing the Med. (Spoiler: we left yachtless (for now), but spiritually buoyed.)

Saturday Night: Waves & Wind

Our next stop was Blackrock Sands. It was blustery, sure—but falling asleep to the roar of the waves with the pop-top roof slightly swaying? Absolutely dreamy. Windy perfection. The bacon and sausage butties we had the next morning tasted even better eaten to the soundtrack of seagulls and surf.

Sunday: Slate, Sheep, and Surprise Speed

Next up: Llanfair Slate Caverns—an unexpected highlight. Let me tell you, if you ever think your job is tough, take a stroll through a 19th-century slate mine and recalibrate your definition of “hard graft.” Fascinating, humbling, and full of stories carved in stone.

Then came the petting zoo detour, a supposed side quest that turned into a full feature film. Our 26-year-old daughter turned into a 6-year-old the moment she saw a goat. When they announced it was feeding time for the lambs and baby goats, my wife and daughter sprinted with an urgency I haven’t seen since the Boxing Day sales. An hour later, I had to pry them away with the promise of ice cream in Barmouth.

We lunched, wandered the beautiful coastal town, and ended the day happy, slightly sun-blushed, and probably smelling faintly of hay.

Monday: The Big Climb

We started early at Hendre Mynach campsite, fuelled up with coffee and determination, and pointed our boots at Snowdon, taking the Llanberis Path—known as the “easiest,” but that’s campervan-speak for “it’s still a mountain, you know.”

The climb was breathtaking—in every sense. And the summit? Majestic. Wild. Pure Wales. There’s no photo that quite captures it—but the pride in my aching legs came close. And yes, the beer at the top was not just earned, it was necessary.

Final Stop: Llandudno Magic

After the descent and a victorious van-load of high-fives, we made our final stop at Llandudno. A late lunch, a wander along the elegant Victorian pier, and a visit to Little Orme, where we were lucky enough to spot some seals doing their best impressions of beach bums. It was the perfect full stop on our North Wales adventure.

Until Next Time…

What made the weekend so special? Freedom. Fresh air. Fires by the lake. Hugs with baby goats. Views from the top of the world. And the kind of laughs that only happen when you forget the itinerary and just follow the road.

A massive thank you to Easicampers Blackburn for supplying us with a spotless, fully-equipped Volkswagen California Ocean that never missed a beat. Everything worked like a dream, from the fold-out beds to the fridge stocked with snacks. We wanted for nothing—except maybe that yacht.

Until next time, North Wales. We’ll be back—with or without a herd of goats.
